Paying Attention to Mental States when Shopping

Posted by Calvin Made on

Going shopping can be a fun experience for many people. It can be a way to relieve stress or just make you feel good. When people do go shopping, they naturally look for sales and collect coupons to ensure a positive shopping experience while saving money at the same time. However, when attempting to ensure a shopping experience is positive, people tend to overlook an important detail. That detail is mental state. The mental state of a shopper can greatly affect what he or she spends money on. Two of the mental states that are often overlooked are hunger and boredom.

Hunger

Imagine you haven’t eaten in two days. Listen to the growl of your stomach and think about your mental state, which is consumed with thoughts of food. In a state like this, the only thing you will want to do is eat. Now imagine you had to go shopping for clothes at the mall. Although you may start by going to clothing stores, eventually the smell of the food court will waft over to your nose. You’ll smell the scrumptious delicacies being served. Your mouth will water as you are filled with an overpowering desire to eat. All of a sudden, you find yourself spending all your money at the food court instead of shopping for clothes. It is a well-documented fact that people who shop while hungry tend to buy more food. However, despite this, people don’t take into account their hunger when going shopping. A great way to save money is to go to a store after you have eaten. That way you will be less likely to waste money on food, and you can buy more of what you actually want.

Boredom

Have you ever looked around your house and noticed all the useless junk you have lying around? All those products collecting dust on the shelves in your garage. All those items you once thought were great purchases. A large reason you might have all these objects is that you bought them while you were bored. Shopping can be a great way to entertain oneself. It can get rid of boredom, which is why many people tend to shop when bored. However, shopping when bored can cause people to waste large amounts of money. When you are bored, there will be many products that catch your eye. In the moment you may think these products will be of great use to you in the future, but the truth is these products only appeal to you because they relieve you of your boredom. Ultimately, the product is useless and a waste of money. A great way to ensure that you don’t end up buying useless products out of boredom is to make a shopping list, and only buying things on the shopping list. By doing this, you are less likely to wander and look for items that you do not need.

Shopping can be a wonderful experience, however, it can also be expensive. That is why it is important to shop smart. Although looking for sales, and clipping coupons is a good way to save money, it is also important to mind your mental states. So the next time you go shopping, make sure you are not hungry or bored.
